The new Stylus SX400 is not the first multifunction printer produced by Epson, in fact they seem to bring out a new budget mid range printer what seems like every month. The Stylus SX400 is a replacement for the DX8400 to which is shares a striking resemblance. Epson say that it offers the same solid platform as the DX8400 but with subtle improvements to things like the paper trays, both front and rear and it apparently is a new colour, which is a slightly darker shade of grey. In terms the SX400 is good but not great, it can’t be faulted n terms of it print quality but the speed in which it prints leaves a lot to be desired. This lack of speed also affects the photo copier function which as a result is slow to produce copies even though the end results are good. The scanner has no problems with speed it produces great quality scans with adequate speed for a variety of documents from basic drawing right up to high resolution photographs. It comes with software for editing photos as well as OCR software which enables converting printed text into computer files that can then be edited using a program such as word. Running costs for the Epson SX400 are affordable depending of what types of printer ink cartridges you are using. The Epson SX400 ink cartridges consist of four individual cartridges and this means each colour has its own separate cartridge. The cost of the cartridges is around £30 for a full set of genuine Epson inks or £15 for a set of compatibles.
