The school I studied had Sewing for a subject. We were taught Crocheting, Knitting, Sewing by hand and machine. Sewing came natural for girls. But the crocheting and the knitting was something else even if both dealt with yarns. Crocheting was fun, using one needle. Knitting, a little complicated, you need to choose from your knitting needle sets and both your hand.
We were taught that there are many kinds of yarn categorized by: fingering weight yarn are for baby wear, sock and other delicate items like shawls and layette sets; sport baby wear weight are used for baby and light-weight adult garments which ideal for crocheting because the end project is not too bulky. This type is made from cotton, cotton with synthetic blends, wood, acrylic or wool blends; Worsted and the bulky kinds are generally for adult wear or throws; hunky types are popular because the stitches are easy to see and ideal for family wear on cool nights; bulky yards are a no-no for crochet and the result is so dense. I use the discount yarn and enjoy crocheting using not only the fingering weight yarn but also the cotton materials that came in a variety of colors. I was good at making little table tops, and small designs that you connect to make bed covers and runners, otherwise, they were just little doilies for vases that were full of flowers that can lighten up and dull or sick room or just plate mats. I really do not know why this sewing subject is no longer in some school curriculum.
