One of the first reactions you may have when you’ve been turned down for health insurance is disbelief or even despair. It’s a natural reaction really. Then again, you may not have dealt with this uncomfortable situation yet. Maybe you don’t know what to do if you’re denied insurance coverage?
You should approach this situation with as level a head as possible. It’s important to keep calm and cool. First, you’ll need to ask yourself some basic questions.
* What can I do?
* What are my options?
* What are the common reasons I’m denied coverage?
If the provider refuses to give you coverage because of pre-existing health conditions, you should continue your search. Contact with other companies to determine their rates and current coverage programs. You will find that the guidelines used by one company are not necessarily the same as those of another. You might be able to find a package that takes your condition into account. There could be a number of packages that will work for you. Never assume that if one company denies you coverage that they all will.
You might have to look for minimum coverage, which may be had at a small, reasonable fee. Of course, this is only a last resort. In this case, you may be buying into a discount services since most of these lower coverage options do not have the necessary medical underwriting to provide adequate insurance coverage.
Depending on which state you live, you may be eligible for health care options called high-risk pools. They are available to people who have been labeled higher risks by traditional insurance companies. They are also deemed medically uninsurable by providers. The pools offer some level of insurance coverage. Such policies can be godsends when you have a high medical bill. They, too, are often deemed last resort options.
Legislation like the 1996 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) has also held out options for relief for those who’ve been denied health insurance coverage. At least, it widened the availability of basic group coverage. Yet, even the HIPAA’s generous provisions do not guarantee coverage for individuals with certain pre-existing conditions depending on past coverage and other specific factors.
By examining some of the information mentioned above you may be able to develop a strategy that will actually help you find the health insurance coverage you need. You have to remember that there is more than one way to find coverage. Take the time to do some research so you can get the best possible information before you dive into the search. With enough time, it very well could be possible to get health insurance coverage and regain some piece of mind.
Get started now. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice from medical professionals you trust, friend, or family. If you know someone who’s had difficulties obtaining health insurance in the past, you might ask them for some additional guidance. Try every potential option.
